Guide to Affiliate Marketing For Teens

 

Affiliate Marketing is one of the largest Industries to make money online. With over a 3 billion dollars being spent, it’s safe to say that there is enough money to be made.

What is Affiliate Marketing?

I’m assuming if you’re reading this you are new to the affiliate marketing scene and might not even know what it actually means. Affiliate Marketing is promoting another company’s product and receiving an agreed commission on every sale or lead created.

Getting the Right Mindset

Affiliate Marketing isn’t a get rich quick scheme. It’s a legit way to make money. This means it will take time, but has huge potential. You need to understand that this takes skill and you should want to learn until you master that skill. Also don’t allow the thoughts of being too young to get in the way, anybody is capable of becoming a successful affiliate. 

Think Long Term

Although there are a few ways to make money short term with affiliate marketing, I would recommend building a strong lasting business. You want a business that you can make money with for years to come. Even if you’re doing it for extra income it’s best that you take your time in building the best business possible. 

You Need a Website

You want to create your own website. By having your own website you eliminate the chance of relying on 3rd party sites. For example, you may be making tons of money on Instagram, but what if they delete your account, you’ll lose everything. You should use 3rd party sites as a way to drive traffic to your site. Wealthy Affiliate offers two free websites with hosting, which you can get up and running in under and hour.

 

Choosing Your Niche

When choosing your niche you will want to choose something you’re interested in. There’s money to be made in every niche so don’t worry about that at first. For example I picked the making money online/personal finance niche, because I am interested in that topic and enjoy helping others and educating them on making money.

When starting your first website I suggest choosing a sub-niche. For example I took the making money online niche a step further into a sub-niche, which is making money online for teens. By doing this you eliminate unnecessary competition and once you become an expert in your sub-niche you can always expand into broader terms. 

Questions to ask yourself when choosing a niche:

  • What am I passionate about?
  • Is there money to be made?
  • What is the problem that people are looking to solve?
  • How can you help them solve that problem?

 

Getting a domain and hosting

When choosing the name for your domain always go for a .com domain. You also want to make sure your domain is relevant to your niche. It wouldn’t make sense to have a domain called iLovecats.com, and have it be about dogs.

There’s a few places that you can get domains and hosting such as Godaddy, Namecheap, Bluehost, and Hostgator. Its up to personal preference. I personally use Namecheap and have loved my experience with them, anytime I’ve needed help they’ve been there. I know a lot of people swear by Bluehost so it really is up to what you like better.

Installing WordPress

Unless you are a master at code you will want to install WordPress. WordPress offers a ton of themes and thousands of plugins which can be used to improve the look and function of your website. It is incredibly easy to use and has a magnitude of awesome features. Wherever you buy your hosting, they should provide a tutorial on how to install and set it up WordPress. Don’t worry about buying a premium theme at first, get content and then you can invest in a premium theme.

What to Sell?

Picking items to promote can be tricky at first but here are some questions that you can ask yourself when choosing

  • Does the product solve my readers problems?
  • Is the product reputable?
  • Would I use the product myself ?
  • Will the product convert the traffic I send to it?

One of the best ways to find out if you should recommend the product is by actually using it yourself. You can also gain trust from your readers by sharing your own experiences with the product, whether good or bad.

Where to find products?

When searching for places to find products there’s two options. Going through an Affiliate Network or going directly through a merchant’s site. Both choices are good, I prefer to use affiliate networks because of the simplicity of having all your affiliate products in one spot.

Creating Content

Creating content is the most important part of becoming a successful affiliate marketer. You need to create unique content that is relevant to your niche. Your site should be a go to for great information that will keep your readers coming back. Without great content your chances of making money are slim.

You may be thinking that you’re not capable of writing great content, that’s fine, you can always outsource the writing. I suggest trying to write though, it will save you money and you will be able to write solid guests posts on other blogs which will help grow your traffic.

You’ll need to have at least 10 posts before you’ll be seeing any big amount of traffic on your site. Google only likes promoting websites that are complete and offer quality to its customers.

Be consist in posting to your site, at least one post a week at first and as you grow the number of posts per week should too.

Generating Traffic 

There is a few ways to generate traffic. You can generate traffic through SEO, paid advertisements, or using 3rd party sites such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Organic traffic will happen over time as your website increases in quality and quantity. Organic traffic is usually targeted and the best part about it is that its FREE. On the other hand paid advertisements are obviously not free but can create large amounts of traffic in short periods of time. Social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram, and twitter, can all be used to generate organic or paid traffic to your site.

Unless you have a bunch a extra cash laying around, I suggest relying on organic traffic until you have made some money. You can then invest that money back into ads to generate larger amounts of traffic. Always make sure you’re paying for targeted traffic.

 

Time to Make Money

Now that you have your site set up with quality content, and good traffic flow its time to make money. To make money you need traffic that is going to click on your links, AKA targeted traffic. If you are sending the right people to your affiliate links the money will start flowing in.
